Aside from Wasabi’s culinary uses it also has medicinal properties which make it a very healthy root to add to one's diet.  Wasabi is an antioxidant.  It improves liver function and protection.  Is an anti-inflammatory and is believed to inhibit cancer growth in the colon, lungs and stomach.  It also has anti-bacterial properties.

(Wasabia japonica)

Wasabi is a member of the Brassicaceae family, as is cabbage, horseradish and mustard. The root is finely grated into a powder, but most of us have seen it as a paste. It has a unique taste and vapors that stimulate the nasal passages more than the tongue.

Warnings:

Do to the high cost of genuine Wasabi many restaurants serve mustard or horseradish with some green food coloring added.  To get the health benefits make sure you are eating the real thing.
