Scientific Name:Cannabis sativa L.
About this Herb:Originating in Central and South Asia, Marijuana is now cultivated in many parts of the world for its psychoactive drug properties or for its medicinal ones. Marijuana and Hemp are both names for the Cannabis plant. However, they are different in that the Hemp strain is grown for its abundant fiber while Marijuana is grown mostly for recreational or medicinal uses. Hemp plants have been developed to produce lower levels of THC, one of the psychoactive molecules that produces the “high” that is associated with Marijuana. Marijuana is a tall, thin, flowering, annual herb that grows to heights of 7 feet in some cases, while the Hemp can grow as tall as 20 feet. The leaves have serrated leaflets that gradually increase in number and size with a maximum of approximately 13 leaflets per leaf. The number of leaflets diminishes to one as it approaches the flowering top of the plant. The female plant produces seeds in her buds, which are clustered, hairy and contain a lot of sticky resin.
