This skin disease, scientifically termed acne vulgaris, is a common affliction to teens and those in their twenties. Typically, it tapers off as the individual ages. It occurs when hair follicles get clogged, often with dead skin cells, and show signs of infection. While the disease if physically not harmful, it can cause feelings of anxiety, reduced self-esteem and, depression.
Genetics are attributed to why a person gets acne, but diet and cleanliness can also play a significant role. It is a hormone related problem that begins at puberty. These hormonal fluctuations can arise at other times in life, including menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.
Without proper treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears.
Acne signs and symptoms vary depending on severity. Whiteheads (closed plugged pores) can appear, Blackheads (open plugged pores). Small red, tender bumps (papules) and pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips.
Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules) can also spring up or painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions).
